Los Rios Street Historic District

Opened in 1905, one of America’s oldest amusement parks and the oldest remaining trolley park on the West Coast. 1905년에 문을 연 미국에서 오래된 놀이공원 중 하나이자, 서부 해안에 남아 있는 가장 오래된 트롤리 파크.

Back when my kid was in TK. At the time, I had as much faith in public education as anyone(, along with a slight fear of English), so those were the days when I pretty much signed whatever form came home from school. On the day of the event, I showed up with my camera and cheered as she ran around the track. Even on her short little legs, she ran hard and kept going. At one point, she took the hand of a tired friend and helped her around the track. The lap marks were already spilling into a third row. A few days later, I received the donation bill—the promised amount multiplied by all those check marks. Of course, it was for a good cause, so I was happy. About as happy as the parents of the girl my daughter had helped keep going. Exactly that happy. 아이가 TK였을 때의 Jog-a-Thon. 당시에는 누구 못지않게 공교육에 대한 강한 신뢰(와 함께 영어에 대한 약간의 두려움도) 갖고 있었기에, 학교에서 날아오는 폼이라면 무엇이든 일단 사인부터 하던 시절이었다. 그리고 당일, 카메라를 들고 가 트랙을 달리는 아이를 열심히 응원했다. 짧은 다리로도 아이는 꽤 열심히, 그리고 꾸준히 달렸다. 힘들어하는 친구의 손을 잡고 부축해가며 함께 트랙을 돌기도 했다. 한 바퀴마다 찍어주는 표식은 어느새 세 번째 줄로 넘어가고 있었다. 며칠 뒤, 그 체크 수에 약속한 금액을 곱한 도네이션 계산서를 받았다. 물론 좋은 일에 쓰이는 돈이니 기뻐해야 했다. 내 아이가 손을 잡고 계속 트랙을 돌게 해준 그 친구의 부모님만큼. 딱 그만큼 기뻤다.
