Until a year ago, I walked this road almost every day—three miles at a time, often more than fifty miles a month. The Good Earth trilogy, Dale Carnegie, Doctor Zhivago, Schopenhauer, The Captain’s Daughter, Raymond Carver, The Iliad, the Stoics, Matsumoto Seichō, Jack Bogle, Munger, Buffett, and Yujeong from RIDI. Waimea Canyon, often called the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. Red cliffs cut through with deep greens—a landscape unlike what I had imagined Hawaii to be. 태평양의 그랜드 캐년이라 불리는 와이메아 캐년. 붉은 협곡 사이로 짙은 초록이 파고드는, 하와이에서 쉽게 떠올리기 힘든 풍경.

Late one afternoon, I walked around with a local friend, talking and taking pictures. I didn’t feel it then, but looking through them later, they felt a little lonely. Maybe it was the season. There was always something different to photograph here. It made leaving too soon a little easier. 늦은 오후, 동네 친구랑 얘기나누며 걷다가 담은 사진들. 당시에는 그런 기분이 아니었지만, 사진을 정리하면서 쓸쓸했음. 계절탓이겠지. 다채로운 풍경을 찍을 수 있어 오래 머물지 못하는 아쉬움을 약간이나마 달래줬던 곳.
