The Stoic Photographer’s Guide to the Galleries
The Stoic Photographer’s Guide to the Galleries I’m Rex, a photographer based in California. As I started going through the photographs I had taken over the years, I first tried using Instagram as a gallery. It turned out not to be that kind of place. Before that there had been SmugMug, Flickr, YouTube, 500px, and more recently, Behance. In the end, I decided to build a website of my own. It freed me from having to compromise quality to fit the rules of a platform, from not insignificant maintenance costs, from the urge to attract other people’s attention, and from the obligation of giving likes I didn’t really mean and following people simply because they followed me. Now I can choose the photographs I want, edit them when and how I want, give them the titles I want, decide which collection they belong to, write as much as I feel is needed when there is something I want to say, and sometimes even add music. Most importantly, I can make this a place that I, more than anyone else, want to come back to and look at again. I’m happy to have that freedom. Most of my photographs begin with instinct rather than a fixed idea or plan. As my child grew up, I naturally began taking more photographs, and I found myself preferring unposed, everyday moments to posed family photos. But trying to predict what a child would do next was almost impossible. In the end, I became more comfortable reacting to whatever unfolded in front of me than trying to plan the photograph in advance. I was usually photographing while we were moving, and I rarely planned a schedule around photography itself. Somewhere along the way, I became, in my own way, a Stoic photographer. Once I get home, I spend some time looking through the photographs, trying to understand what caught my attention in the first place. While I am shooting, I never know where the next ball is coming from and am usually just trying to react in time. But once I have the time to slow down, I try to give each photograph the attention it deserves. I do most of my work on a 16-inch screen, so I recommend viewing the galleries on a larger screen whenever possible. Even if you are on a phone, please turn it sideways for a moment :) The album descriptions include Location · Time · Lens information from each shoot. Not the camera body. Within each collection, albums are generally arranged chronologically by when they were photographed. A newly edited and posted album stays at the top for a while. When the next album is posted, the previous one returns to its proper place in the timeline. FACE is a private collection because it includes family occasions and personal events. No comments, no likes, no subscriptions, no ads, and nothing to buy. Published July 28, 2026 Updated August 28, 2026

A Pilgrimage to Fenway Park
“Blue blood runs through my veins.” Both Lee Man-soo and Yang Joon-hyuk had said it. When Lee retired and Yang, too, was pushed out by a team that had fallen short in the Korean Series six times, I turned away from the club I had spent seventeen years loving and resenting in equal measure. Before long, another team caught my attention, one with its own long history of frustration and heartbreak. (For much the same reason, I’m fairly certain that if football had been my game, I would have ended up rooting for the Buffalo Bills. But) baseball was my game, and the team I found was the Boston Red Sox, who had lost four World Series since their last championship in 1918. At the 1999 All-Star Game at Fenway Park, the entire ballpark rose to its feet as Ted Williams entered in a golf cart. When he reached the mound to a standing ovation, he was surrounded by All-Stars from both leagues. Among them, he spotted Nomar, drew him close, and offered him a few words of encouragement. After Ted threw out the ceremonial first pitch, Pedro Martínez took the mound and struck out five batters in two innings. After that mass, my blood turned from blue to red. And Fenway Park became my cathedral.
