“Blue blood runs through my veins.” Both Lee Man-soo and Yang Joon-hyuk had said it. When Lee retired and Yang, too, was pushed out by a team that had fallen short in the Korean Series six times, I turned away from the club I had spent seventeen years loving and resenting in equal measure. Before long, another team caught my attention, one with its own long history of frustration and heartbreak. (For much the same reason, I’m fairly certain that if football had been my game, I would have ended up rooting for the Buffalo Bills. But) baseball was my game, and the team I found was the Boston Red Sox, who had lost four World Series since their last championship in 1918. At the 1999 All-Star Game at Fenway Park, the entire ballpark rose to its feet as Ted Williams entered in a golf cart. When he reached the mound to a standing ovation, he was surrounded by All-Stars from both leagues. Among them, he spotted Nomar, drew him close, and offered him a few words of encouragement. After Ted threw out the ceremonial first pitch, Pedro Martínez took the mound and struck out five batters in two innings. After that mass, my blood turned from blue to red. And Fenway Park became my cathedral. “내 몸속에는 파란 피가 흐른다”고 말했던 두 선수. 이만수가 은퇴하고, 양준혁마저 한국시리즈에서 여섯 번이나 좌절했던 팀에서 쫓겨났을 무렵, 나는 17년간 애증의 시간을 함께했던 그 팀을 향한 시선을 거뒀다. 그리고 얼마 지나지 않아, 오랜 좌절과 아픔의 역사를 가진 또 하나의 팀이 눈에 들어왔다. (아마 이런 이유로 내가 풋볼을 좋아했다면 버팔로 빌스의 팬이 되었을 거라고 확신한다. 그러나) 나는 야구팬이었고, 내 눈에 들어온 팀은 1918년 우승 이후 네 번이나 월드시리즈에서 패했던 보스턴 레드삭스였다. 1999년 펜웨이 파크에서 열린 올스타전에서 테드 윌리엄스가 골프 카트를 타고 등장하자 관중들은 모두 자리에서 일어섰다. 기립박수 속에 마운드에 도착한 테드는 양 리그의 올스타들에게 둘러싸였다. 그중 노마를 알아본 그는 곁으로 불러 격려의 말을 건넸다. 테드의 시구가 끝난 뒤 마운드에 오른 페드로 마르티네스는 2이닝 동안 다섯 타자를 삼진으로 돌려세웠다. 그 미사 이후 내 피는 파란색에서 빨간색으로 바뀌었다. 그리고 펜웨이 파크는 나의 성전이 되었다.
