Robolights
Three years ago, I went looking for Robolights in Palm Springs, only to find the gates closed. I took a few photographs from outside the iron gate. It was only later that I learned I hadn’t simply arrived too late.
Beginning in the 1980s, Kenny Irwin Jr. filled his home and yard with robots and strange sculptures made from discarded appliances, metal, and all kinds of salvaged materials. Over the decades, his private world grew into one of Palm Springs’ best-known Christmas attractions. But as the crowds grew, so did problems with traffic and safety, eventually leading to a lawsuit from the city. Public access ended in 2018, and today the site can only be visited by appointment.
