Sometimes I sit down to post photographs I finished editing years ago, only to start editing them all over again from the beginning. Okay, that is usually what happens. Why I went there, the journey getting there, what happened while I stayed, even the moment I pressed the shutter—most photographs emerge only after passing through all of that, through something like the brightly colored tunnel of an express car wash inside my head. Back home, the ones that survive several more rounds of self-censorship are finally finished with whatever editing software I happened to be using at the time, and with whatever presets I happened to think looked good then. Even so, most of them never get the chance to be posted publicly. They sleep for years on hard drives or somewhere in the cloud. Some photographs never even get touched after I come home. A few albums I have posted recently were edited for the first time more than a decade after I took them. Others are still waiting for me to begin. Too many similar photographs. A place I didn’t like that much after all. Too many pictures in the album. A set that looked like too much trouble to edit. Or sometimes they simply never got their turn. Years pass. Then an opportunity like this comes along and I open them again. And every so often I encounter something much like finding an old photograph of myself as a teenager—not only dressed with all the misplaced confidence of adolescence, but foolish enough to have preserved the evidence. Sometimes it is worse. Sometimes all I have left is a JPG instead of a RAW file. A RAW file is like an unbroken egg. I can still decide whether I want sunny-side up, over easy, basted, or crispy fried. A JPG is an egg that has already been cooked one of those ways. Today even phones can shoot RAW, but back then there were cameras that didn’t support it at all. And even when they did, RAW files could be several times larger, so I often kept only a few photographs I thought really mattered in RAW and shot the other hundreds as JPGs. It made sense to me then. Now I wish I had done otherwise. But, regret won’t bring that time back. All I can do is make the best of the photographs that remain. So even when the inexperience in some of them shines a little too brightly, I’ve chosen to keep them as part of the record rather than erase them. 예전에 편집을 끝낸 사진들을 포스팅하려다 다시 처음부터 편집을 시작하게 되는 경우가 있다. 아니, 대개 그렇다. 그 장소에 가게 된 계기, 가는 과정, 머무르며 겪었던 일들, 그리고 셔터를 누르던 순간까지. 대개 한 장의 사진은 터널식 자동세차의 알록달록한 터널 같은 마음속 기억들을 빠져나온 다음에야 생겨난다. 집으로 돌아와 다시 몇 번의 자기검열을 거쳐 살아남은 사진들은, 당시 쓰던 편집 프로그램과 당시 마음에 들어 만들어 놓았던 프리셋을 거쳐 비로소 마무리된다. 그럼에도 대다수의 사진은 퍼블릭에 포스팅될 기회를 얻지 못한 채 하드디스크나 클라우드 속에서 오래도록 잠들어 있다. 어떤 사진들은 아예 집에 돌아온 뒤 손도 대지 않았다. 최근에 포스팅한 앨범 중에는 십몇 년 만에 처음 편집을 시작한 것도 있고, 아직 시작조차 하지 않은 앨범들도 있다. 비슷한 사진이 너무 많아서. 다녀온 곳이 별로 마음에 들지 않아서. 앨범에 사진이 너무 많아서. 전체적으로 편집하기 까다로워 보여서. 또는 그냥 운이 닿지 않아서. 그렇게 세월이 흐르고, 지금처럼 다시 손댈 기회가 생겨 사진들을 들여다보면 가끔 난감한 순간을 만난다. 마치 사춘기 때 제 잘난 맛에 어설프게 꾸미고 다닌 것도 모자라, 그 숭한 모습을 버젓이 사진으로까지 남겨 놓았다가 훗날 다시 마주하는 것처럼. 더 좋지 않은 경우도 많다. RAW가 아니라 JPG만 원본으로 남아 있을 때다. RAW란 깨뜨리지 않은 계란과 비슷하다. 지금 내가 원하는 대로 써니 사이드 업, 오버 이지, 베이스티드 에그, 크리스피 프라이드 에그 가운데 하나를 골라 만들어 먹으면 된다. 하지만 JPG는 이미 그중 하나로 요리가 끝난 상태다. 지금은 휴대폰에서도 RAW를 지원하는 경우가 있지만, 당시에는 카메라 중에도 RAW를 지원하지 않는 제품이 있었다. 지원하더라도 파일 크기가 몇 배씩 차이 나다 보니, 꼭 필요하다고 생각한 사진 몇 장만 RAW로 남기고 나머지 몇백 장은 JPG로 찍어 두는 경우도 많았다. 그때는 나름 맞는 선택이었지만, 지금은 후회로 남는다. 그러나 후회한다고 그 시간이 돌아오는 것은 아니다. 할 수 있는 일은 남아 있는 사진들로 최선을 다하는 것뿐이다. 그래서 간혹 눈부시게 미숙한 사진이 있어도, 지우기보다는 기록으로 남겨두기로 했다.
